OUR INSPIRATION

The heart and soul of our inspiration lie in the divinity of Lord Balaji, Sankatmochan Hanuman Ji and the divine life of our founder Dudhdhari Maharaj

Origin & Foundation

Sree Dudhdhari Math was founded by Sree Swami Balabhadradas Ji Maharaj, a monk belonging to 16th Century. As per legends Sree Swami Balabhadradas Ji Maharaj used to survive only on milk and hence came to be popularly known as Dudh Ahari Maharaj (one who consumes only milk). With the passage of time, for the sake of ease of pronunciation, the term evolved as Dudhdhari. The Math thus takes the name Dudhdhari Math.

A Brief History

The History of the Math starts from the middle of 16th century. So to comprehend the historical importance, that was precisely the time when Emperor Akbar was busy with his conquests, establishing the Mughal empire throughout the length and breadth of the country and was onward in his journey from Prince Jalaluddin to Akbar – The Great. Around the same time another spiritual leader Goswami Tulsidas was scripting a text which was to become a Text Book of spiritual

excellence throughout the globe. Thus contemporary to such occasions, a wandering monk reached a place covered by deep forests, which today is the capital city of Chhatisgarh, Raipur. The wandering monk was Shree Swami Balbhadradas Ji Maharaj. Where Shree Dudhadhari Math stands today, that was totally cut off from the mainstream of civililization. When he arrived there, he was awestruck by a sight. He observed a rock structure which resembled Hindu God Hanuman Ji. He further saw a cow of a specific breed (Surhi breed) emerged from the jungle and bathed the structure with its own milk. Balabhadradas Ji stayed there for a little while and found that such bathing ceremony was a daily occurrence. He then started residing there permanently making his small cottage as used be the practice for hermits and sages. He got engaged in the services of his chosen deity and pursued deep spiritual practices and penance and attained great spiritual heights. It has passed from generation to generation that he used to partake the milk that flowed from the deity of Hanuman Ji after it was bathed by the Cow.

As he survived only on such milk he came to be known as known as Dudh Ahahari Maharaj (one who consumes only milk). With the passage of time, for the sake of ease of pronunciation, the term evolved as Dudhadhari. The Math thus takes the name Dudhadhari Math. Time flowed in its own way. One day Maharaja of Nagpur which was out on a hunting expedition, came to that spot and what he saw, left him mesmerized. He saw that a sage was immersed in deep meditation; a trance like state and a cow and a tiger were sitting at ease on both sides of the saint. At this scene, the Maharaja was convinced that the sage he is standing before is a spiritual man of divine rights. Thus after the sage (i.e. Shree Swami Balabhadra Ji Maharaj) came out of the state of trance, the Maharaja interacted with him. He told him that as a king he is in possession all the worldly delights, however he is childless and he is extremely concerned about the situation. At this Shree Swami Balabhadradas Ji asked him to personally present the concern before Lord Hanuman to which the king complied with. After that brief rendezvous the king went back to hi s kingdom. At the turn of a year he was blessed with a son. The King along with his members of the royal came to Shree Swami Balabhadra Ji Maharaj to seek hi blessings and also the blessings of Lord Hanuman Ji who the king believed had been instrumental in blessing him with a son. During this meeting the king Maharaja Bhonsle expressed his willingness to construct a temple of Lord Balaji at that place to which Balabhadra Daj Ji accorded. After that the temple was constructed which still stands to tell the tale of the bygone days and quench the spiritual thirst of the thousands of devotees. Just when the temple was constructed and Lord Balaji was coronated in it, a miracle took place. The seat of Lord Hanuman Ji right since inception was at the spot just opposite to the newly constructed temple. Now Lord Balaji (who is another form and manifestation of Lord Rama) was present, but the deity of Lord Hanuman was looking at a direction away from Lord Bala Ji. It is said that Lord Hanuman turned his face in the necessary direction to ensure that he could see his Lord continuously. Thus right since those days the Math is believed to be bestowed with great spiritual vibes and divinity is embodied in it.
It is also a proven fact (as can be ascertained from official documents) that Shree Swami Balabhadra Das Ji Maharaj looked after the affairs of the Math for two hundred and Seventy Five years.
